    MELA/CI-MELA/VU

The “frivolity” was OK by me.

On Facebook its full of photos, comments and “like”.

There was really a lot of people.

    We really enjoyed ourselves.

    But this is not unusual.

We spoke, we told, I photographed blindfolded, some asked some questions, maybe predictable, but these are the questions, and the anxiety of our times.

I really like Chico because he is capable of “moving” people.

Benassi is a giant. Toni is a brother.

Here below I’m posting one of the contributions which appeared in light of the facts.

    I liked it.

It is only a point of view but I found it interesting.

Its by Sara Lando and its from her blog

    .

Frivolity is the art of understanding who you are

“Yesterday I was in Savignano sul Rubicone together with Barbara because there was this kind of thing that we didn’t understand very well what it was, but in the same space-time there was Settimio Benedusi, Toni Thorimbert, Chico de Luigi and Jacopo Benassi and they weren’t trying to sell or present anything, which is something out of the common.

When somebody that much bigger than me (and I’m not talking about age) lends himself to be so kind and let me ask a few questions, I move my ass and attend the event.

Some things they said where enlightening.

Others where provocative, and listening to them I realised that if I heard them only 3 years ago I would have probably got pissed off instead, now, I wasn’t only listening but I understood.

They are four extremely different photographers in terms of personalities, subjects, experiences. But to see them together it made me think of finding myself in front of some kind of variation on the theme and for the rest of the afternoon I tried to understand what was the common ground that made them somewhat similar.

Driving back home, I think I’ve understood.

The true difference between a professional photographer and an amateur photographer is not really the fact of being payed for it, of having a certain kind of equipment, having a portfolio of clients that pay for it.

Who is on top is the people that have stopped making excuses, that have taken responsibility for who they are artistically and humanly and that is willing to pay for the consequences, because he has its own path which is different from others and that it doesn’t need to be understood by looking only one part, from outside.

That has understood that nobody cares what you haven’t been able to do.

At the end of the day what really counts is what you have accomplished.

Not what you thought of doing, what you would have done, what you said you would do but then “the dog ate my homework”.

I think that at different stages of their stories they pissed in their pants like everybody else, with the difference that where the others went home to change, they have the looks of someone who simply took off the pants and kept on going.

The high point of the event: to watch Benedusi take photographs blindfolded and still capture not only a nice photograph but also in his true style.

A perfect illustration of the difference of doing things by chance and doing them following the chance.

Anti climax of the day: the person who immediately put up his hand to ask a question and asked: “analogical or digital?”. ARE YOU SERIOUS?”

    Sara Lando

I highly recommend also this post:

    A brief film

by Valentina Bianchi, very, very beautiful.

    (why rewrite what

    has been already written well?)

MY FRIENDS: FRIVOLITY, MEETINGS AND WORKSHOP

Next month we will have the opportunity to meet up, without this screen as a filter!

Therefore, in a rigorous and chronological order:

    – Next Saturday, 13th of November, in Savignano sul Rubicone on the path of the SI FESTIVAL and once again put together by the tireless Chico De Luigi, myself, Mr. Benassi and Mr. Thorimbert will do what the title already anticipates something dumb of epic proportions: a frivolity! What does it mean? I have no clue. Maybe, like Huey, Dewey and Louie, we’ll speak with one starting a phrase, the second will say itand the third one will finish it. In short something will happen! And even for free! Informations and details (with excellent words by Patricia de Croce) will be on the No Panic facebook page. Obviously as if it was antani

    –  From the 24th to the 28th of November at the FORMA space in Milan there will be also this year the FOTOGRAFICA. I will be there on the 24th, the day of the opening, with the show of Martina Colombari’s portraits, of which I am the curator. The day after, the 25th, at 20:30 I will hold a talk and will do a little something.

    –  Since I’ve participated to TPW as a lecturer many people and organizers have asked me to participate at various workshops. I’ve always kindly declined the invite, for a thousand and one reasons, especially because having the luck of being part of the best… it is best to stay with the best! I do enjoy teaching at a workshop, because it allows me to learn a lot. Therefore when the “best” overseas asked me to teach it was not difficult to convince me: from the 27th of November I will be in Brasil for two workshops. Informations and details here.

    CAPE TOWN

Here I am, I am on the other side of the world, in cape town, on a job.

It is always a little weird to leave, to stay for a period of time far away from your own space, from what you are used to.. And it is even stranger if in this space and time you spend it (as it is happening) upsetting the seasons: I am in the middle of spring.

In andrea de carlo’s beautiful book that I am reading now (LEIELUI) there are a few pages dedicated to traveling and airplanes, with an interpretation of the word “take-off” which is very interesting, I would even describe it as very clever: when you leave you take-off, in its more traditional of meanings but it is also as if the head would detach from the body, tearing away from the neck, take-off, precisely..

I am in a hotel, or better, in a guest house, with very few rooms, very pretty. It is situated in the middle of the gay area, run and maintained by a gay couple,  like La Cage aux Folles: it is very comfortable.

In my room right next to my bed I have a bath tub with feet and a view: every night I take a nice hot bath, with salts in the boiling water. Fragments, details. Lavender bunches on the breakfast tables. Spinning blades on the ceiling.

    Being suspended.

“At the centre of the void

    There is another party”

    -Roberto Juarroz

    ==========================================================

I’ve never been a photographer who brings his camera around, well I don’t even know why, I would say laziness. But since there is the iPhone I take a lot of pictures. I especially enjoy photographing objects and landscapes:especially the latter, in the beautiful places where I go, are often extraordinary.

Below is a little photo I took during these days with my iPhone. I rarely give technical information, but let’s give it this time: I took it with the iPhone 4 with hdr disabled. I took four photographs in succession, then joined them with the AUTOSTITCH software. After that I opened the file in PHOTO FX and I modified it (special FX-B/W looks dramatic). Then I opened it in PHOTOGENE to give it a contrast layer, and fiddle wit the levels and add a little black border.
