the corriere della sera asked my opinion on models. I understand that it is an issue of fundamental importance for the fate of humanity, so I therefore copy and paste what came out yesterday on the very noble milanese newspaper:
it is widely accepted that a model should be beautiful. in fact, more than a common opinion, it is an obvious banality! what other qualities should in fact be asked for from a model if not beauty? but from my point of view, that of a professional fashion photographer, this is not exactly the truth.
let us leave aside the question of taste oscillation (due to countless factors, not least also economic ones), so what is nice today does not mean that it is nice above all, lets try and understand what are they, in a certain common standard of beauty, the qualities necessary for a model. to illustrate this let me give you a quick introduction to what is a fashion shoot as well as a catwalk: they are an attempt to showcase the clothes, but above all is to tell a story through the use of the clothes themselves. naturally the story must be functional to the clothes, as they have to reflect the story: a two player game, where the goal is to build a kind of theatre that can be fun and interesting for the viewer. as you get actresses in a theatre, on a photoshoot you will have the models, whom have to immerse themselves in a role in such a manner that is effective. a model will never be just beautiful or ugly, but above all right or wrong for a certain role. at this point it is clear that gestures and interpretation will be better if filtered by intelligence, culture, talent, experience and obviously beauty.
it might be strange to you but, I assure you that, for a professional like myself, it is much better having a good model rather thatn a beautiful model!
PS: (anyways in my opinion to have three lines written like that on the same page as ettore mo, beppe severgnini and above all gian antonio sella it fills me with pride!!! )
