BLOG NEW DESIGN

…and after restyling the website here is the one for the blog striving always to maintain, here as well, neatness and quality, thanks to the intelligent creativity of the art director massimo pitis.

As I wanted to claim (with pride!) on the header this blog exists since 2003, in internet years it is equivalent to the paleolithic. And now for some stats: since I’ve added the statistics (in September 2005) this site has been visited by 369.359 individuals, which have viewed 3.371.881 pages and they, on average, browsed for 2 minutes and 59 seconds and left 6.786 comments (only in the past few years, as before there wasn’t the technology).

I don’t really know what these number represents, but I know very well that this space (born from an intuition of my ex assistant alessio gianni) has personally represented a very important and precious reality, a space where  my memories are present, my life and the attempt to share what I do. A space where I project myself, i think, in a very sincere way, like an adolescent who writes in his secret diary, thinking that no one will ever read it. A space which, maybe, has made me get to know myself and has surely made me get to know a lot of ingenious people, funny, dicks, rude, extremely kind, arrogant.. And so on till infinity. A space where I harbour my reflections, my frustrations, my anger,my joy, in sum, simply speaking my life.

Now in an all new design!

SHADOWS

from wikipedia

“A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it. The cross section of a shadow is a two-dimensional silhouette, or reverse projection of the object blocking the light.

For a non-point source of light, the shadow is divided into the umbra and penumbra. The wider the light source, the more blurred the shadow.

If there are multiple light sources there are multiple shadows, with overlapping parts darker, or a combination of colors. For a person or object touching the surface, like a person standing on the ground, or a pole in the ground, these converge at the point of touch.

The farther the distance from the object blocking the light to the surface of projection, the larger the silhouette (they are considered proportional). Also, if the object is moving, the shadow cast by the object will project an image with dimensions (length) expanding proportionally faster than the object’s own length of movement. The increase of size and movement is also true if the distance between the object of interference and the light source are closer. This, however, does not mean the shadow may move faster than light, even when projected at vast distances, such as light years. The loss of light, which projects the shadow, will move towards the surface of projection at light speed.

The projected shadow may appear to have moved faster than the speed of light, but there is no actual physical manifestation moving upon the surface. The misconception is that the edge of a shadow “moves” along a wall, when in actuality the increase of a shadow’s length is part of a new projection, which will propagate at the speed of light from the object of interference.

Since there is no actual communication between points in a shadow (except for reflection or interference of light, at the speed of light), a shadow that projects over a surface of large distances (light years) cannot give information between those distances with the shadow’s edge.”

A few minutes (after a job), for an idea which I’ve had for ages: to photograph something that does not exist in itself. Something which is the testimony of a presence which is outside herself.

To photograph what is certified to be a presence/absence.

To photograph the “nothing” which would not exist if “something” didn’t exist.

To photograph only shadows:

WORKSHOP

I wonder why, but there is a proliferation of workshops. There isn’t one photographer that is not doing one. I have never seen so many offers for photographic workshops.

We want to say things as they are, but? Photographers without art nor part that for two cents they put a pseudo model’s pair of tits on display for amateur photographers which are only interested to that.

The usual arrogant little dick head! But this is the reality.

I’ve already written this a few times, but it’s worth writing it again, because in a jungle of amateurs in jeopardy is very important to defend and protect who is doing things the right way: the only reality in italy and one of few in the world that distinguishes itself for its seriousness and complete package is the TPW, toscana photographic workshop. They have just relaunched their website, comprehensive with all the informations.

Ok, I am also paricipating to a week towards the end of July, but don’t come to mine, it’s not worth it, it’s so boring… there are other great photographers for which it is really worth it following them…

FATTIES AT THE AQCUA GYM

obviously I also haven’t understood how I am: often enough I feel like a coke addict that smokes dope, what I mean is that I don’t know if to be super active or completely couch potato. (hey, I am kidding, I don’t do either of those!)

This useless preamble was just to explain that I love doing a lot of things as much as I like doing fxxk all.

Professionally speaking the indecision inevitably leans towards being hyperactive (as I speak for example, Sunday afternoon, I am working in my studio, while you, calm and relaxed are coming back from various sea side locations…), although sometimes I manage to find a way to make others do what I am supposed to do: but usually they are small and unimportant expedients, mostly coming out badly.

Instead the one that I did/didn’t do during a recent trip for a job in egypt came out very well: we where shooting bathing suits, (paying!) guests inside a tourist village in marsa alam. These villages, in egypt by the red sea, are the scariest, most  terrifying, squalid invention of modern tourism. Difficult, impossible to explain by words. I understand that to go to the red sea during winter is the easiest and painless solution in order to be in the heat during winter, but this is the reality that I am trying to explain.

Exactly, “trying”: it is the absolute reality which is much better to describe with photography, rather than with words.

When I was there I would have wanted to take the photographic camera and go around to tell what I had in front of my eyes. But then immediately the joints (which I don’t smoke!) took the place of the cocaine (which I don’t take!)…

So what did I do? What I will do when I grow up: the producer! I took my assistant and I gave him the task. I explained to him well what I would have liked to see, how to do it and how to create it. He went and did it.

Here is the story below. Giorgio Serinelli my assistant shot it. I like it a lot.

Well done giorgio!

GECKO ADVERTISING PHOTO FESTIVAL

I just came back from apricale, the beautiful little town in ligury where the first edition of gecko advertising photo festival took place.

The intrepid festival organizers, sabrina and susanna, gave way to my foolish ways, building a little red house for me, on which I made them write “I’ll speak to anyone about anything”, to speak about photography with whoever was there.

ho fatto anche altre cosine, tipo fotografare fotografi morti circondati da vedove sexy, oppure fotografare io stesso come in un bellissimo libro di saramago, “cecità”…tutte cose che però si sono perse, perse come lacrime nella pioggia… ;)
