I LOVE publishings. one of the moments in which I am truly happy is when I’m in those fantastic kiosk at those serious airports around the world and I can spend hours flipping through all those magazines. And I go through all of them: from pornos to cuisine to motorbikes through to horse riding. at 16 I had a tab at the news stand by my house, where I bought everything and more. At 20 the magazine FRIGIDAIRE changed my life. in short, I repeat, I unconditionally love publishings and the magazines they produce.
today I found this.
I couldn’t believe it.
a magazine dedicated to the making of cakes and sweets for napoli’s soccer team fans. I swear!
they even have a centrefold like on playboy!
this together with the movie REALITY by the great matteo garrone that I watched last night (*****) brings me to a state of absolute enjoyment.
here is the must-have magazine:

It has been almost a month since the exciting week in imperia for my A_MARE exhibition.
And here, at last, the final presentation, the video of the inauguration (with the video of the sea which I had projected on the external walls of the liberty style building) and Her, the wave that, printed three meters by two, was the only star of the show:

it has been already a month since it came out but you can still find STYLE MAGAZINE (corriere della sera’s monthly magazine) for a little while longer on the news stands with the column “the impossibles”, this time dedicated to a girl as “noble” as she is simple and nice, ginevra furstenberg.
we set the shoot at her house, and imagining ginevra as a little princess we decided, with daniela stopponi (the fashion editor of the shoot), to take all images in natural light and backlight, trying to represent a kind of fairy-tale world.
this is the magazine:
these are the original images, plus a few more that didn’t make it in the magazine:
some backstage photographs, by pasquale ettorre:
last but not least: in this house full of children’s toys I found a star wars mask, and I spent the “hair&makeup” time taking pictures of myself in the mirror imagining I was one of the characters of the fantastic saga by the great george lucas.
You can click on the images for the original size.

the corriere della sera asked my opinion on models. I understand that it is an issue of fundamental importance for the fate of humanity, so I therefore copy and paste what came out yesterday on the very noble milanese newspaper:
it is widely accepted that a model should be beautiful. in fact, more than a common opinion, it is an obvious banality! what other qualities should in fact be asked for from a model if not beauty? but from my point of view, that of a professional fashion photographer, this is not exactly the truth.
let us leave aside the question of taste oscillation (due to countless factors, not least also economic ones), so what is nice today does not mean that it is nice above all, lets try and understand what are they, in a certain common standard of beauty, the qualities necessary for a model. to illustrate this let me give you a quick introduction to what is a fashion shoot as well as a catwalk: they are an attempt to showcase the clothes, but above all is to tell a story through the use of the clothes themselves. naturally the story must be functional to the clothes, as they have to reflect the story: a two player game, where the goal is to build a kind of theatre that can be fun and interesting for the viewer. as you get actresses in a theatre, on a photoshoot you will have the models, whom have to immerse themselves in a role in such a manner that is effective. a model will never be just beautiful or ugly, but above all right or wrong for a certain role. at this point it is clear that gestures and interpretation will be better if filtered by intelligence, culture, talent, experience and obviously beauty.
it might be strange to you but, I assure you that, for a professional like myself, it is much better having a good model rather thatn a beautiful model!
PS: (anyways in my opinion to have three lines written like that on the same page as ettore mo, beppe severgnini and above all gian antonio sella it fills me with pride!!! )

when I say that photography is a language and that it is better a bad photo that tells a story rather than a good photo that doesn’t tell anything they could seen as quirky and imaginative concepts. Instead there is nothing more concrete!
and I try to explain it with a simple example, taken from language: between the phrase “if we had gone the day before yesterday it would have been the metaphor of tomorrow” (a useless phrase with no sense, but full of refined syntactic twists) and the words “fuck move!” (which you are shouted at three seconds before getting run over by a tram) which one would you like to hear?!?
PS: intellectual musings after a lovely evening last night at SI FESTIVAL by NO PANIC
PS 02: its not really relevant, but the one below here is the sofa bed where I slept last night here in savignano.

this week in imperia has been absolutely wonderful: everything was perfect and beautiful!
I will talk about it more in detail later..
right now I’d like to focus on an event that I enjoyed a lot and that also gave me a lot of satisfaction: a workshop for children aged 10 to 13 years old organized by the city of imperia in the beautiful premises of villa faravelli. we also have a nice interview by andrea of imperia tv, here.
we spent four hours in two days, where (obviously!) I never spent a second speaking about time/aperture/lens/resolution but I applied the same formula that I use for the adults, talking about choices, talking about planning, talking about attitudes, talking about sincerity, talking about originality…
the great advantage is that children are not blinded by the useless gadgets of PHOTOGRAPHERS! no sir! I found the children to be lively and smart, whom have followed without much bullshit the few simple tips that I was telling. With EXTRAORDINARY results! seriously!
EVERYONE delivered great results.
at the end of the first day I gave a little “homework”.:create an image with a specific theme, I didn’t want something simple (your brother, your mother, your dog…) rather something that would lead inevitably to think what to do and why. the theme I chose was FEAR.
not easy, right?!?
and this is the amazing result of twelve years old federico b. Which he created with the help of his brother and father.
photographers with mega telephoto lenses and super cameras, watch and learn…

It is with great honour and pleasure that I begin a collaboration with Modena’s prestigious fondazione fotografia, on of the few reality series dedicated to photography.
I will be shoulder to shoulder with important lecturers with one of my workshops, scheduled for november 2013 (yes, in more than one year…).
All info here
PS: anyways in a few days the exhibition dedicated to my beloved edward weston will open its doors: not to be missed!
